Russ Powell is a whirlwind of hilarious anecdotes, spot on observations and intelligent crudeness packaged in a loveable, cheeky and ebullient XL shell. Touted as one of - if not THE - hottest properties in UK Comedy, Russ is in constant demand as a Stand Up, MC and Writer. He's gigging at some of the biggest and best clubs in the country, whilst writing for several TV and Radio shows and developing his own comedy projects.
Russ had been told by friends, family and enemies he was funny. The meaning behind the use of the word 'funny' varied depending on who said/shouted it. He wasn't convinced personally but in December 2009, as a dare he did his first stand up gig. To his surprise people laughed...lots. This one time excursion into the world of stand up funnies was enough for Russ and he thought little more of it until a few months later when he did a second gig to see if the first one was a fluke. People laughed again...lots. Russ had caught the comedy bug and there was no cure. Not like his eczema which cleared up with a dab of steroid cream.
For the next few months Russ dabbled in stand-up on the London open mic circuit but a change of personal circumstance (he moved day jobs, nothing that drastic) meant he could reclaim his evenings and was able to travel further for afterwork gigs. Since then (roughly November 2010) Russ has been gigging like a bad man all over our fair country and beyond building up stage time, writing material, meeting lots of awesome people and generally enjoying the heck out of everything comedy.
Russ even had an audience member buy him a drink once. That was the pinnacle. He is related to this audience member but that is beside the point.
In the short time that Russ has been gigging it up properly he has had considerable success. Stuff like reaching the finals of various new act competitions, performing at festivals both in the UK (Wychwood, Endorse It, Bestival) and abroad (Benicassim..twice), supporting the Canadian King of the one liner Stewart Francis on tour, gigging at some of the biggest clubs in the country (The Comedy Store, The Stand, Komedia), writing for several mainstream and not-so-mainstream TV and radio shows and receiving glowing reviews for his first ever solo hour long show 'Powell to the People". So he's at least half decent.
Russ also runs and MC's Tuns of Fun comedy at The Three Tuns in Henley. Check out details of that gig and all the other gigs that Russ will be doing in that page what is called 'gigs' up the top there.
